Machine learning for scientific and sensor data — from precision agriculture to seismology.
The Data Science group develops machine-learning methods for structured, relational and scientific data — with a particular methodological focus on deep learning for image, speech and sensor data, and on data that involves repeated measurements of the same people, places or things ("data with individual effects"). On the applied side, the group turns sensor data into actionable knowledge for agriculture and the bioeconomy, in interdisciplinary projects with partners inside and outside computer science.
Research
- Deep learning for image, speech and sensor data
- Machine learning for data with individual effects — repeated-measurement and hierarchical data, with applications spanning seismology and psychology
- AI for precision agriculture — localised, sensor- and GPS-guided detection of crop stress, fungal disease and weeds
- AI-based livestock monitoring, e.g. KAMI, which detects respiratory and stress indicators in dairy cattle from optical sensor data, independent of breed or posture — funded under Germany's National AI Strategy
- Sustainability, efficiency and animal welfare in agricultural digitalisation, in projects funded by the EU, DFG and the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE)
